Germany disputes mask requirement

On Tuesday, Chancellor Merkel will meet with the prime ministers of the federal states to coordinate the Corona procedure. The mask requirement will also be a problem. Two prime ministers have already made it clear that they are not interested in a tightening.

Angela Merkel is concerned about the number of infections in Europe. Local sources of infection need to be addressed very clearly, otherwise there would be 19,200 infections a day at Christmas. She is critical of the measures of the Berlin crown.

KAngela Merkel (CDU) has expressed concern about the increasing number of corona infections in Germany. Local sources of infection must be addressed very clearly. If the weekly figures developed as before, there would be 19,200 new infections a day by Christmas, Merkel said according to “Spiegel” and “Bild” in a videoconference of the CDU presidium. The infection figures in Europe are worrying, the chancellor said.

Everything had to be done in Germany to prevent the numbers from growing exponentially. The “Bild” quotes them with the words: “Keeping the economy running, keeping schools and kindergartens open: football is secondary here.” Unsurprisingly, the Robert Koch Institute reported a comparatively low number of new infections. Health authorities had transmitted 1,192 cases in one day, as the RKI announced on Monday.

Experience has shown that the number of registered cases is usually lower on Sundays and Mondays, also because not all health authorities report data to the RKI on weekends. On Saturday, the highest value since April was reached with 2507 new corona infections.

Advising Prime Ministers on the Pandemic

This Tuesday, the Chancellor wants to hold a videoconference with the Prime Minister to discuss appropriate measures against the growing number of infections in the pandemic. Schools, day care centers and the economy take priority. After this information at the CDU presidium meeting, Merkel expressed her concern regarding the economic situation.

Government spokesman Steffen Seibert warned ahead of the deliberations that consistent measures must be taken to prevent a further increase in new infections. “We are anything but powerless.” But we must act boldly. New infections have tripled since June. The federal government views this with great concern, at the local and regional level there are even giant steps. It is important not to overload the health authorities in monitoring the chains of infection. Some of them are currently in the attack. When asked how the Chancellor obtained this number, Seibert said he could not comment on the “statement that was allegedly made in inner circles.”

Merkel also expressed doubts that the Berlin state government is seriously trying to crack down on the outbreaks in light of the sharp rise in numbers in the capital. “Something has to happen in Berlin.”

The head of the CDU, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, said that according to the participants, the round with the prime minister was very important for the development of the number of corona infections. She asked for “a united signal” from the group. “People want a common line of policy.” Regional developments must always be considered. A flexible system depending on the local location makes sense, he said.

The peak of new infections reported daily in Germany was over 6000 in late March / early April. Then the number tended to decrease and has increased again since July.

The pandemic hits parts of the economy, such as tourism, very hard. The EU ministers responsible for this will report on Monday via a video link. Health is in the foreground, said federal government tourism commissioner Thomas Bareiß. “Our goal, however, is to limit travel restrictions to what is necessary and allow people in Europe as much freedom to travel as possible without neglecting health protection.”
