EU Council President Michel defends the EU physical summit

EU Council President Charles Michel has defended the decision of a physical EU summit in Brussels despite Corona’s worsening situation in Europe. “It is clear that we have to adapt to Covid-19,” said the Belgian on Thursday during the EU summit. However, there are some issues on which the personal presence of the EU heads of state and government is essential for decision-making. “Today’s Brexit debate required the physical presence of top politicians.”

Furthermore, delegations are consulted before each EU summit. Several participants at the summit made it clear that they wanted it to depend on the subject in the future if there would be a face-to-face meeting.

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had previously criticized the summit taking place in Brussels. It should have been better to use video conferencing, he said, according to the Ritzau news agency. However, like Michel, he stressed that a face-to-face meeting was critical on some issues.
