Constance: Uli Burchhardt is still mayor

In the Constanza mayoral elections, incumbent Uli Burchardt (CDU) defended his position. The 49-year-old won the new elections with 49.5 percent of the vote against his challenger Luigi Pantisano (left), who received 45.1 percent. Andreas Matt (independent) finished in third place with 5.1 percent.

In the first vote three weeks ago, Burchardt was still second behind Pantisano. But since none of the candidates achieved an absolute majority, a new election was necessary, this time with a simple majority. The turnout was 61.4 percent.

Pantisano, 41, had caused a stir as Burchardt’s strongest challenger. Had it won the mayoral elections, Konstanz would have been the first city in West Germany where the left has the mayor. The main focus of his agenda was on environmental issues. He tried to avoid public contact with the Left Party as much as possible. The Konstanz CDU accused him of this.
