northAfter a teacher was beheaded near Paris, four people were detained by the police. The detainees, including a minor, were from the family of the attacker, who was killed by the police, reported Saturday night from judicial circles. French President Emmanuel Macron said it was “clearly” an “Islamist terrorist attack.”
The crime victim in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, northwest of Paris, is a history teacher who is said to have recently showed his students the cartoons of Muhammad from the satirical newspaper “Charlie Hebdo.”
Initially there were conflicting reports on the identity of the perpetrator. French media reported that the perpetrator killed during the police intervention was the father of a student of the history teacher. He deliberately persecuted the educator to “punish” him for insulting the prophet in front of the children. Others said the attacker was a Moscow-born 18-year-old Chechen. This was not initially confirmed by the police.
Macron visits the crime scene
Macron immediately summoned a crisis team and visited the crime scene on Friday night. There the visibly ill president said: “One of our fellow citizens was assassinated today because he was teaching, because he taught the students freedom of expression, the freedom to believe and not to believe.” The president did not give details about the course of the crime and referred to the prosecutor. which will be expressed in a few hours. “I call on all our compatriots to stay together, to be united,” Macron said. “He won’t get away with it,” he said, referring to the violence and terrorists.
The newspaper “Le Parisien” reported, citing investigators, that the author was a known threat to the police. His police files were marked with an S for “security risk,” it said.
The teacher was apparently threatened
The history teacher is said to have been threatened in recent days on social media by parents who were upset by his teaching on freedom of the press. On October 5, a parents’ association run by Muslim parents filed a complaint with the school’s management that the teacher was spreading “Islamophobic” ideas in the classroom, “Le Parisien” wrote. The case was known in the Ministry of Education. The Minister of Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer, had recently announced that he wanted to intensify the fight for secularity in the classroom.
The Charlie Hebdo trial is currently underway in Paris. The assistants of the terrorists who broke into the editorial office of the satirical newspaper “Charlie Hebdo” on January 7, 2015, must be tried until mid-November. The newspaper had reprinted the Mohammed cartoons at the start of the trial, which the teacher is said to have used as an opportunity to show them to his predominantly Muslim students in order to raise awareness on the issue of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. The teacher taught at a secondary school (Collège) in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine. The sleepy city on the Seine has long been known for its mayor, former Socialist Prime Minister Michel Rocard.
Shot by cops
When the police arrived at the scene of the crime, a residential area in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, around 5:30 pm, the perpetrator was still with the victim’s body and threatened the policemen with his weapons before fleeing. Based on initial information, he is said to have had a knife and a firearm. Officials warned residents via Twitter. The neighborhood was cordoned off extensively. The police were able to take the alleged perpetrator to the neighboring community of Eragny. He resisted and tried to attack the agents into taking their firearms. The attacker is said to have yelled “Allahu Akbar” (God is great) after the crime. The man died of gunshot wounds, police confirmed. The terror prosecutor is investigating.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin interrupted a trip to Morocco to reach the scene of the crime. He announced the establishment of a crisis team with President Macron and Prime Minister Castex. Castex also wanted to go to Conflans-Sainte-Honorine right away. There is a large police station in the city that is responsible for the surrounding socially disadvantaged areas. The district also has a specialized crime and Islamism unit, the so-called Anti-Crime Brigade (BAC). Eragny Mayor Thibault Humbert praised the quick intervention of the police. The attack was said to be one of “terrible violence”. Marine Le Pen, leader of the right-wing populist Rassemblement National party, said: “Islamism has declared war on us. We have to get him out of our country. “
France has been rocked by Islamist attacks for years: more than 250 people died. Therefore, people are almost always aware of the threat of terrorism. Just a few weeks ago there was a knife attack in front of the old editorial building of the satirical magazine “Charlie Hebdo”.
