Suburb –

The munitions disposal service has informed the city of Cologne that the WWII bomb cannot be defused in Cologne-Klettenberg; It should be detonated at the scene in a controlled manner tonight.

The public order office urges passersby to adhere to the barriers. According to the law enforcement office, people repeatedly ignore the barriers and enter the evacuation area. This massively prevents the controlled detonation of the World War II bomb, which is ordered at night.

To ensure the explosion, emergency services bring around 30 cubic meters (equivalent to about 42,000 kilograms) of sand to the site. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service is not yet able to indicate a time for the demolition.

Previously, the public order office of the city of Cologne had authorized the munitions disposal service to deactivate the blind man from the WWII bomb. This was found Tuesday morning during construction works in Cologne-Klettenberg on Luxemburger Strasse at number 342. According to information from the city, it is a ten-quintal bomb with a long detonator.

Difficult conditions due to rain

Due to the long-lasting detonator, it was necessary to act quickly and defuse the bomb on Tuesday. To do this, the danger zone had to be cordoned off and evacuated within a radius of 500 meters. According to the city, around 7,200 people are still affected.

The law enforcement office ended the second ring at 6 pm A city spokesman said a family had to be taken from their apartment with the help of police. And the rain and the onset of darkness are currently hampering the work of the munitions disposal service and the law enforcement office.

Timing of deactivation is not yet clear

Luxemburger Strasse is completely closed between Sülzburgstrasse and Militärringstrasse. The closure of the airspace has been requested for 6.15 pm.

The danger zone must be evacuated within a radius of 500 meters.

So far 64 patient transfers have been carried out. According to the city, two positive corona cases and nine suspected corona cases were determined. “These people were evacuated and housed in isolation,” said a spokesman.

Contact point in the Südstadion – KVB establishes shuttle traffic

A contact point for all evacuated residents is in the southern stadium, which is accessed via the Vorgebirgsglacisweg. There are currently more than 100 people there. The shuttle service with KVB buses from the evacuation zone to the point of contact is still available.

The place where the fiasco was found is on Luxemburger Strasse in Klettenberg.

KVB’s shuttle service is set up as follows: buses pick up people at the corner of Sülzgürtel and Luxemburger Strasse and take them directly from there to the contact point in the Südstadion. The rules of the Crown Protection Ordinance apply, i.e. a textile mouth and nose cover must be worn on the bus. Also in the possible queue in front of the point of contact, the minimum distance of 1.50 meters must be respected and a mouth and nose cover must be worn.

Multiple KVB lines affected by shutdowns

KVB lines 13 and 18, as well as bus line 142, are affected by the blockade. Line 18 does not currently run between the Eifelwall and Hürth-Hermülheim stops. Line 13 instead takes the normal route from Ehrenfeld to the Zülpicher Straße / Gürtel stop. From there turn onto Gürtel and drive to the end of line 9 at Hermeskeiler Platz.

Due to road closures, the entire area must be extensively avoided. All road users are asked to form emergency lanes around the restricted area for patient transport. (ksta)
