Suburb – Serious tram accident in the center of Cologne! At around 8.15am on Monday morning, two trains of lines 1 and 7 collided head-on between Neumarkt and Rudolfplatz near the Mauritiussteinweg.

Both trains jumped off the tracks. The driver (42) of line 7 and the driver (57) of line 1 were seriously injured. Around 24 passengers on both trains suffered minor injuries and were treated by rescuers. 13 of them had to be transferred to hospitals. Eleven were examined on the spot and some referred to their general practitioners.

Police are now investigating how the accident may have occurred. According to the KVB, Line 1 was on its way to Bensberg. Line 7 should go straight on towards Rudolfplatz, but has turned left onto Mauritiussteinweg. It is not yet clear why. Matthias Pesch, KVB spokesperson: “We are sorry that there are people injured. We hope everyone recovers quickly. “

Meanwhile, the closure of the Hahnenstrasse has been lifted and car traffic is open in both directions. KVB lines 1, 7, 9, 136 and 146 are running their usual routes again.

Fortunately, the tram line 1 driver’s injuries turned out not to be as serious as originally supposed, so he has now been released from the hospital. The conductor of line 7 of the tram will continue to receive hospital treatment.
