According to initial information from a KVB spokesperson, both drivers, a woman (42) and a man (57), were seriously injured by the force of the impact. The driver was trapped in her driver’s cab and had to be released by the fire department.

Both were treated at the hospital. According to the first information, the 42-year-old man was in danger of death. As the police announced in the afternoon, it should be stable. The 57-year-old man has already left the hospital.

Two KVB railways collide in Cologne

Both KVB drivers were seriously injured in the collision due to the force of the impact.

There were numerous injuries on both lanes. According to the city of Colonia, 13 slightly injured passengers were taken to clinics. Eleven other passengers were examined on-site and discharged or referred to their general practitioners.

The accident happened at 8:17 am .: According to the spokesperson, line 1 was going in the direction of Bensberg, line 7 should have gone in the direction of Rudolfplatz, but suddenly it turned in the direction of Mauritiussteinweg.

Police are investigating why this happened. A technical defect in the signal system cannot be ruled out, but it can also be considered human error. The fact is that the switch was set incorrectly, so line 7 did not follow directly.

Police seized video recordings of the train and public surveillance footage from Neumarkt, and the two trains were also seized as evidence. An expert must evaluate the traces of the accident.

The Hahnenstrasse had to be closed to traffic

The collision had far-reaching effects on KVB’s operations: the schedules of various train and bus routes were disrupted for hours and there were long delays on the tracks.

Line 1 only ran between Bensberg and Neumarkt, as well as between Weiden-West and Rudolfplatz. Line 7 only ran between Zündorf and Neumarkt and between Frechen-Benzelrath and Aachener Str./Gürtel. Line 9 changed between Hermeskeiler Platz and Zülpicher Platz and between Königforst and Neumarkt.

KVB accident: traffic jams and interruptions in the city of Cologne

Car traffic in the city was also severely affected: Hahnenstrasse had to be closed for several hours because both trains had jumped off the tracks. This also caused cars to get stuck in the Rudolf-Wagner-Straße, Rudolfplatz, Hahnenstraße and Neumarkt areas.

At around 11:30 a.m., workers had put the derailed Line 7 back on the rails. A little later, this was also possible for line 1. Around 1.30 pm, the closures could be lifted again. The fire brigade and the rescue service of the city of Cologne were in action with 47 employees and 14 vehicles.
