Cologne bomb: 7,200 people are evacuated in Klettenberg

There is a bomb alarm in Cologne again! During construction works on Tuesday morning (October 6) in Cologne-Klettenberg on Luxemburger Strasse, a blind man from World War II was found.

It’s a ten-hundred-peso bomb with a long detonator. The site is at number 342 (between Sülzgürtel and Militärringstrasse). Now it is clear: some 7,200 people have to be evacuated, quite a high number for a single bomb.

The Cologne bomb must be rendered harmless as soon as possible

As the city of Cologne announced, all buildings around the site will be evacuated immediately due to the long-term detonator. The largest evacuation of the area takes place from the site of discovery to the outside. The bomb has to be deactivated today, a radius of 500 meters is estimated for evacuation. The second ring tour is already underway.

• the KVB Line 13 take the normal route from Ehrenfeld only to “Zülpicher Straße / Gürtel”, from there to the end of line 9 (Sülz, Hermeskeiler Platz).

Problem: The closures are causing traffic chaos in the south of Cologne. In some cases, traffic backs up onto the A4. Also, many side streets are narrow.

A contact point has been established for evacuated residents in Cologne’s southern stadium (access via Vorgebirgsglacisweg). There is also a shuttle service with KVB buses from the evacuation zone to the contact point.

It works as follows: buses pick up people at the corner of Sülzgürtel and Luxemburger Straße and take them from there directly to the contact point in the Südstadion. It is mandatory to wear a mask on buses and a distance of 1.50 meters should be observed in the queues.

The law enforcement office will now make the decisions about the further process. When the failure will become harmless has not yet been conclusively determined.

Last bomb found in Cologne five weeks ago in Müngersdorf

The last time a fiasco was found in Cologne was exactly five weeks ago, on September 1 near the Rhein-Energie-Stadium in Müngersdorf.

The evacuation radius was 800 meters. Approximately 4,100 people and 50 horses were affected. The contact point for residents was set up at the Rhein-Energie-Stadion, where some 100 people sometimes stayed.

That same night, around 6:50 pm, the bomb was detonated in a controlled manner. At the time, too, it was a ten-quintal bomb with a long detonator. (tw)
