Chick Corea is dead: controversial jazz pianist

The mythical jazz pianist Chick Corea dies, the musician and composer died of cancer at the age of 79, as he announced this Thursday on his official Facebook page. Therefore, the disease was diagnosed very recently. Korea died on Tuesday.

Born in 1941 in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Korea was one of the most important representatives of jazz rock. In his long career he won 23 Grammy Awards. He played with trumpeter Miles Davis, among others, and in 1971 he founded the formation “Return To Forever”. As a composer, Corea wrote the Latin jazz classic »España«, probably his best-known hit.

In Germany in particular, Chick Corea was highly controversial due to his membership in Scientology. Korea dedicated several compositions to the founder of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard, and praised him as a “great artist.” When the musician wanted to perform in Stuttgart in 1993, he was excluded from the organizer after the Baden-Württemberg state government threatened to cut subsidies for the event. Korea sued the state government, but the lawsuit was dismissed.
