Chaos after the Formula 1 accident: “Are they going to kill us?”

Mugello’s career has gotten off to a turbulent start. After the first phase of the safety car, there is a violent mass crash: a driver uses the pit radio to vent his anger.

In the turbulent first round of the Tuscan Grand Prix at Mugello, the third of the Max Verstappen World Championship with Red Bull, and sensational Monza winner Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri) have already retired after a collision. Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel fell from 14th place on the grid at the end of the field, the Heppenheimer could not avoid Carlos Sainz’s McLaren and found himself in 18th place after a necessary change to the front wing.

“Already on the formation lap, the engine almost stopped, it felt similar to Monza,” Verstappen said later in Sky. “I couldn’t accelerate any more. The crash just happens. I probably wouldn’t have been able to finish the race anyway.”

Pole Lewis Hamilton lost the lead to his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas at the start. Vettel’s teammate Charles Leclerc climbed to third place in Ferrari’s 1000th race.

“That was damn stupid”

Only a few laps later things got worse: the safety car had to go out again, after a massive violent collision on the start straight immediately after the end of the safety car phase. McLaren driver Carlos Sainz, Williams driver Nicholas Latifi, Kevin Magnussen in the Haas and Alfa driver Antonio Giovinazzi crashed on lap 7. The quartet apparently remained unharmed. Sebastian Vettel, who is at the end of the field, could barely evade.

Haas driver Romain Grosjean praised on the pit radio: “That was very stupid! Are they going to kill us or what? That was the worst thing I’ve ever seen.” Sainz then spoke very openly: “The crash was really scary, we are going 290 km / h. That could have ended much worse.” The race was then temporarily interrupted.
