Now it could happen very quickly: the first vaccination centers will open in Germany just a few weeks after the presentation of the first promising candidate vaccine. Federal Minister of Health Spahn is working to start this year.
Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn assumes that the first German citizens can be immunized against the corona virus in vaccination centers from December. “There is reason for optimism that there will be approval for a vaccine in Europe this year. And then we can start vaccines immediately,” the CDU politician told the Germany publishing network.
He called on the federal states for the vaccination centers to be ready for use by mid-December, the minister said. This seems to be working. I would rather have a vaccination center that is ready to go and out of service for a few days than an approved vaccine that is not used immediately, Spahn said. Finance Minister Olaf Scholz is also raising hopes for vaccines this year. “We have made preparations so that it can start in December,” Scholz said Sunday night on “Bild live.”
Spahn was also optimistic that it would not take until the end of 2021 for all population groups to be vaccinated. For example, many of the possible vaccines will not require deep cooling. They could be issued in normal doctor’s offices.
300 million doses of vaccines for Germany
“And then it goes fast,” Spahn said. After all, “each year, up to 20 million people would be vaccinated against the flu in a few weeks.” He announced the establishment of an online platform that provides information on the vaccination rates achieved, differentiated by age and region. “In particular, when we achieve a high vaccination rate among particularly vulnerable population groups, we can gradually relax the restrictions,” he announced.
According to Spahn, Germany has secured more than 300 million doses of vaccines for Germany through the EU Commission or through bilateral agreements and options. “Even with two doses per vaccination, we would have enough for our own population and we could share it with other countries,” Spahn said.
The minister announced that Germany would also secure the vaccination doses from the Dessau vaccine manufacturer IDT. “From today’s point of view, there is reasonable hope that the Dessau IDT can also get approval for a vaccine in 2021,” he said before visiting the company on Monday. It is “very encouraging and can also make us proud that, after Biontech and Curevac, the third German vaccine project is on a promising path,” Spahn said.
