In view of the dramatic corona infection figures, the CDU leadership is postponing the party conference planned for December 4 in Stuttgart to elect a president until next year. The party congress should ideally take place in the new year in attendance.
reIn view of the crown situation, the CDU canceled its federal CDU party conference in Stuttgart scheduled for December 4. Instead, the federal executive committee should now decide the legal options for a digital party congress on Dec. 14, CDU general secretary Paul Ziemiak said on Monday after meetings of the presidium and the federal executive committee. This is likely to require a constitutional amendment. “There is agreement that a party presence conference would be the best option,” Ziemiak added. If this is possible, it should be decided at the CDU board meeting in mid-January. A digital party congress with subsequent voting by mail is also conceivable.
On Sunday night, a meeting of the party president with candidates Armin Laschet, Friedrich Merz and Norbert Röttgen was interrupted after five hours without result.
According to participants, Laschet called for the party congress to be postponed until spring, even a date in May is conceivable. Merz, on the other hand, wanted the decision on December 4 and relied on his concept of a decentralized party congress in a dozen places that had been developed by Secretary General Paul Ziemiak.
A compromise solution
Kramp-Karrenbauer sees his proposal as a compromise: there is a postponement, but in the event of a new critical pandemic situation, the decision will be made digitally from January.
Friedrich Merz reiterated meanwhile Twitter his position that the CDU will have to clarify the issue of leadership this year. In his view, a digital party conference on December 4 is as possible as a vote-by-mail decision by the president.
In WELT AM SONNTAG, Armin Laschet spoke in favor of postponing the party conference. The holidays should be a role model. What they expect from citizens, they would have to do themselves: reduce contacts whenever possible. “This party congress is not absolutely necessary now, it can be postponed. Now we must concentrate all our strength, energy and efforts on fighting the pandemic, ”said the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia.
