Warning strike in Berlin: these restrictions apply to the S-Bahn

Passengers in Berlin switching to the S-Bahn due to BVG’s warning strike should be prepared for some restrictions. Due to a fire caused on the S-Bahn cables occurs on the S-Bahn lines S41, S42, S8, S85 and S9 delays and cancellations. The train service is interrupted between Neukölln – Sonnenallee – Treptower Park – Ostkreuz. Here’s how the affected S-Bahn lines work:

  • Line S41 / S42: Ostkreuz <> Neukölln (via Gesundbrunnen, Westkreuz, Südkreuz) every 10 minutes
(Between Gesundbrunnen – Westkreuz – Bundesplatz there is a 5 minute cycle from around 5 am to 10 am and around 1:30 pm to 8:30 pm)
  • S8 line: Zeuthen / Grünau <> Schöneweide how Greifswalder Strasse <> Birkenwerder
  • S85 lines: not bad
  • S9 line: Schönefeld Airport <> Schöneweide how Ostbahnhof <> Spandau

Problems also arose in S-Bahn traffic on the lines early in the morning S3, S5, S7 and S9. After a fire at the Tiergarten S-Bahn station, there was no stop in the direction of the Zoological Garden. At around 7:20 am, the lines returned to normal. But there were train delays and cancellations due to a police operation at Friedrichstrasse station.

BVG warning strike: that’s what industrial action is all about

The background to the warning strikes is the demand by the Federal Association of Verdi for uniform rate regulation nationwide for the approximately 87,000 employees on local public transport. Currently, local transportation rates are negotiated individually in the 16 federal states. Negotiations are currently underway in Berlin, among others. Because the working conditions in the respective regions have developed too far from the union’s point of view, regional regulations should be complemented by one at the national level.

As a result, there was already a nationwide warning strike at the end of September, and Berlin and Brandenburg were also affected. This week, campaigns followed in North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, Lower Saxony and Bremen. In addition to Berlin and Brandenburg, Bavaria is also affected on Friday.

“Unnecessary health risk”: BVG criticizes renewed warning strike

“Radical traffic change and demographic change remain the main challenges for local public transport in Berlin and Brandenburg,” said Jeremy Arndt, Verdi’s Head of Transport in Berlin and Brandenburg. “To meet the next staffing need and not compete with each other, you need uniform standards for working conditions. This is the only way to hire the necessary skilled workers and keep existing staff. Currently, poor working conditions routinely cause high levels of sick leave. These also have an impact on the performance of the line and lead to cancellations, ”says Arndt.

The BVG harshly criticized the warning strike. In view of the increasing number of corona infections, this warning strike came at a completely wrong time and exposed passengers to unnecessary health risk. Only privately operated tours can be offered. There are 23 daytime bus routes and 23 nighttime routes. Four more lines would operate with restrictions.

Warning strike at BVG Berlin: passenger association shows understanding

The Berlin passenger association IGEB has expressed its understanding for the announced warning strikes. “Of course that’s more than annoying,” said interest group vice chairman for railways, local transport and passenger affairs, Jens Wieseke, the German news agency. “But there are also reasons why people are on strike.”

The action is also the result of years of political disinterest in public transport problems. “The evolution of bad wages is not a new finding.” Wieseke appealed to both parties to reach a solution quickly, because the current situation in Corona does not facilitate the situation for passengers.
