But there are no previous school holidays at Christmas – SWR Aktuell

Last week it already seemed certain that the Christmas holidays in the country will be extended due to Corona. But the government canceled the announced regulation.

The Christmas holidays in Baden-Württemberg will not be extended this year. A government spokesperson confirmed this to SWR on Tuesday morning. Apparently, the state government has not been able to agree on a corresponding regulation. Instead, the holidays should start on December 23, as originally planned.

“I did not find it acceptable to make the decision without the possibility of supervision,” Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) told the government press conference on Tuesday. According to Kretschmann, the Susanne Eisenmann Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs (CDU) did not want the holidays to be extended either.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Kretschmann explained the reasons for the cancellation of the vacation extension.

There is no attendance requirement for students

In lieu of extended holidays, the following applies: Students in grades 1-7 must be able to come to school on December 21 and 22. As before, there is no compulsory attendance these days. For eighth grade students, there will be distance learning both days. Schools that want to use flexible vacation days to start Christmas holidays earlier are, of course, free to do so, according to the state government in a message.

The reason given for this decision is the low risk of infection in children. For older youth, however, this is much stronger and therefore distance education is also offered. When in doubt, older students could stay home without parental supervision, the state government said.

Decision against the “good compromise” extension

Kretschmann described the plans Tuesday as a “good compromise.” Because with early vacations there was also the question of who would take care of the children and young people who could not be cared for by their parents, said the politician Verde. It is also important that people can continue to work in important professions.

“The spirit of the MPK decision is enough. So I think it was a good compromise.”

Baden-Württemberg thus contradicts an agreement between the federal government and the states that the heads of government signed last week. In fact, they had agreed that the Christmas holidays would begin on December 19.
