Also on the day of the strike: because of Corona, Berliners still have to keep as much distance as possible from each other. “We call on all passengers to cover their mouths and noses and comply with the mask requirement,” the S-Bahn said.

Other than that, drivers should be prepared for full roads on Tuesday. According to the German Weather Service, cyclists can expect dry weather.

► The warning strikes in Berlin had already started on Friday. The first thing that was affected was the water company. Hundreds of workers at about a dozen locations participated in a four-hour warning strike. The water supply to the capital was never in danger.

► The Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) recycling yards were closed on Saturday. Those who came with bulky waste had to take their things. “No waste was accepted,” said a BSR spokesman.

That’s why there is a strike

“It is clear to us that the strike will cause a lot of inconvenience to passengers,” said Jeremy Arndt, Verdi’s Chief of Transportation. “But we can only react to the incomprehensible blocking attitude of the employers with a strike.”

Separate negotiations on new collective agreements are currently taking place in the 16 federal states. The Verdi Federation had initially called for the national warning strike. The background to this is their demand for a nationwide collective bargaining agreement that should complement state regulations.

Currently, the employer rejects it. On Friday, both parties met in Berlin for another round of collective bargaining at the BVG, with no results being achieved. After the union’s announcement, they were postponed, employers said.

“We don’t understand this warning strike,” says Anke Stier, CEO of the Berlin Municipal Employers Association (KVA). “Last year alone there was an increase in revenue for all BVG employees with an annual volume of 102 million euros.”
