BVB vs. VfL Wolfsburg: individual notes and critiques
On Sunday afternoon, Borussia Dortmund started the competitive year 2021 with a duel against VfL Wolfsburg, after losing three straight games at home, BVB ended their negative streak and achieved a 2-0 win at work. All actors of the individual review:
BVB – TOR: Roman Bürki – score: 2.5
It is usually presented very carefully on the line. He was almost always right when the guests closed and had little difficulty in his shows. Only at Gerhardt-Chance Bürki did he need the luck of the capable (7th).
DEFENSE: Thomas Meunier – Grade: 4.5
On the right side of the defense, he seemed completely out of place at first. He left too much room for the wings and also handed out invitations with his actions on the ball. But he eventually held back and caused danger at least at first with his wing cannons.
Hummels mats – Note: 2.5
He saved his team from falling behind in the wolves’ furious offensive start with several major cleanup actions. As a result, there were isolated weaknesses at the time of the duel, but the defensive order was always maintained with a clear announcement.
Manuel Akanji – Note: 2.0
He had to get into dangerous duels in his own penalty area several times. He always made it extremely difficult for opponents, although he was not always able to clarify conclusively. He provided good ideas in preparation for the game and took the lead with his head (67th).
Raphael Guerreiro – Note: 3.0
He was often attacked early and was often tied up in his own half. After a sleepy start, it increased notably in the defensive duel. He has found his usual offensive line after the break.
MIDDLE FIELD: Thomas Delaney – Grade: 3.0
He mostly carefully secured his colleagues’ attacks and captured many important second balls. Occasionally he would occupy higher positions himself, but he only had a few ideas around the box.
Axel Witsel – Note: 3.0
After a faltering start with the ball, he became increasingly confident and often relocated the game to the correct rooms with good passing. He also indicated the tough duel needed, but at times he let his opponents pass without much resistance.
Marco Reus – Note: 3.5
With his maximum chance, he put the first exclamation point on BVB (7th), but then he dived too far. Out of nowhere, I had some notable scenes on the box, but remained completely hanging in midair for minutes behind the tip.
Emre Can (from 85) – no rating
It came just before the end to carry the result over time.
Giovanni Reyna (bis 90.) – Notes: 3.0
It was the most notorious in a moderate BVB offense early on. Suggests good ideas in forward motion and occasionally causes goal-scoring hazard with direct passes. After the change of sides, not much happened.
Dan-Axel Zagadou (90.) – no evaluation
It came after 2-0 as additional protection for the defense.
Jadon Sancho – Note: 2.5
It was duplicated in many scenes by the Wolfsburg team. So he got stuck in the box on almost all of his actions in the first round. He left the dressing room with much more determination, scored the first goal and made the decision himself in injury time.
ATTACK: Erling Haaland (up to 80) – grade: 4.0
He made his comeback after a hamstring tear and immediately filled in the correct gaps again. However, he was repeatedly overlooked by other players in the best finishing position. Therefore, he mainly forced his chances without help. Despite several attempts, I was unable to get past Casteels. Obviously it still needs time.
Steffen Tigges (80 °) – no evaluation
After his appearance in the cup in Braunschweig, he was able to accumulate the first minutes in the Bundesliga. He almost gave his first touch. There were no more opportunities for him.
VfL Wolfsburg – TOR: Koen Casteels – Note: 2.5
For a long time he kept his back free and even showed very good deeds on several occasions. He dealt against Reus (11th) and Haaland (45th, 53rd) both brilliantly. The Belgian was not to blame for the goals.
DEFENSE: Ridle Baku – Grade: 3.0
On the right wing, he raised the alarm on occasion and recorded several good forays to the baseline. With a few exceptions, he had his side under control even when he moved backwards.
Marin Pongracic (bis 78.) – Note: 3.5
He carefully kept the danger zone tight in places, but made several bigger wobbles in positional play. Every now and then he would let himself be too tempted by the opponent without actually having to intervene. Nor did he get into the head duel before the 0: 1 (67th).
Maxence Lacroix (from 78th place) – no rating
He replaced ailing Pongracic in central defense in the later stages. The defensive order was in the final phase with Wolfsburg advanced there.
John Anthony Brooks – Score: 3.5
Defended in man-oriented duels with Haaland partly as strong as a bear. However, when Borussia attacked quickly, the correct reactions did not come in time. He also seemed disoriented at the goal.
Paulo Otávio – Note: 5.0
He was regularly too deep in during the Dortmunders’ attacks and was only late in their duels. Therefore, he was unable to avoid dangerous crossings repeatedly. Before 0: 2 he was the last defender to play complete (90º).
MITTELFELD: Yannick Gerhardt (up to 70 °) – Grade: 3.0
He often looked for his way to the top, and thus opportunities occurred to him. He should have put his team in the lead early (7th). As a result, it could only be prevented from advancing through a foul.
Admir Mehmedi (70+) – no rating
You must ensure creativity in the tens space in the last 20 minutes. The plan no longer worked.
Maximilian Arnold – Note: 2.5
He contributed several good ideas from his low position in midfield, sometimes even leveraging the entire BVB defense with his abrupt passes. He appeared defensively against defense mainly at height.
Xaver Schlager (up to 87) – score: 3.0
It can be found almost everywhere in midfield and gathered many strong offensive and defensive scenes, especially in the first round. He often initiated attacks with his passes, but lost a bit of his line after a very strong start in the duels.
Bartosz Bialek (from 87.) – no rating
With his physical presence in injury time, he repeatedly caused disturbances in the BVB’s defense. But there was no longer any chance for him.
Renato Steffen (up to 87) – score: 3.5
He made many good combinations with Baku. He often chose the correct paths to run and was very helpful to the team on the ball. He had his feet in the game with first chances, but then he deteriorated a lot.
Daniel Ginczek (from 87.) – no rating
He permanently held a position in the painting. He didn’t change fast enough on free balls to get another shot.
Josip Brekalo (bis 70.) – Notes: 3.0
He made the game mostly quick after winning the ball and collected some strong action on the switch moves. In the last third, however, he could not put his qualities into practice.
Joao Victor (70+) – no rating
Dripped some needle sticks on the left side. However, he did not jump more than a dangerous flank.
ATTACK: Wout Weghorst – Grade: 3.5
He waited in vain for a long time for usable passes to the striker, but was repeatedly staged after the break. He did not necessarily provide enough scoring opportunities (41, 54, 71). However, he was by far the most dangerous player on his team.
