Bundesliga: number zero between Wolfsburg and Leverkusen

VfL Wolfsburg started the new Bundesliga season with a draw against Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

At the end of matchday one, Lower Saxony won a 0-0 draw against Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday night (September 20, 2020). For coach Oliver Glasner’s team it would have been better if the first 500 fans returned to the Volkswagen Arena, because VfL had many more opportunities in this difficult game.

“If we played our counterattacks a little better, a victory might have been possible, but overall the result is fair,” said VfL goalkeeper Koen Casteels. For his fellow defender Renato Steffen it was a “good assessment of the situation, although we can still improve a lot”.

Without Havertz there is almost no danger

Leverkusen, on the other hand, had to say that the team had lost their best player Kai Havertz (Chelsea FC) and their best forward Kevin Volland (AS Monaco) in the summer. The traditionally strong “Werkself” played very harmlessly.

“We lacked the last offensive quality,” said Bayer goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky, describing his team’s biggest deficiency: “We will see what we can improve, but we will also improve from game to game.”

Wirtz should fix it in midfield

In midfield, manager Peter Bosz relied on the lone 17-year-old Florian Wirtz, who also got his first chance of the match in the 25th minute after a double with Moussa Diaby, which he missed quite miserably. VfL had the best chances anyway.

In the 32nd minute, Maximilian Arnold fired a corner kick directly into goal and hit the post. Soon after, defender John Anthony Brooks and forward Wout Weghorst entered the penalty area completely free. But Brooks headed over the gate from six meters (33rd), while Weghorst missed Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky (42nd) from eleven meters.

Mehmedi scores offside

Spectators saw a visually superior Bayer once again in the second half. But the “wolves” were faster. Former Leverkusen player Admir Mehmedi even scored the goal in the 57th minute, but his assistants Joao Victor had been left out in this quick counterattack.

The fact that Lower Saxony had already been challenged in the Europa League qualification in Albania just three days earlier was hardly noticed. They vigorously defended their goal and only allowed the guests a good chance to score through Diaby (64th).
