Borussia Dortmund began the new Bundesliga season with a clear success over Borussia Mönchengladbach. Erling Haaland scored twice.
In the best match in the league, the ambitious Borussia from Mönchengladbach failed to win anything with 0: 3 (0: 1), not even in the eleventh competitive match against BVB. The only 17-year-old Giovanni Reyna (minute 35) with his first goal of the season and the 20-year-old forward Erling Haaland with a double (54th, penalty / 77th) delighted the Dortmund fans and toasted on Saturday (19.09.2020 ) in the sixth consecutive year for the runner-up’s first win. “We made few mistakes, we took small risks, we rarely lost our minds. A good start, but we are still far from the maximum,” BVB defense chief Mats Hummels said on “sky.” Gladbach’s coach Marco Rose complained of “a very regrettable defeat” but admitted: “Dortmund played much more effectively.”
Joy of the spectators
After months of ghost games during the coronavirus pandemic, a maximum of 10,000 spectators were once again allowed into Germany’s largest stadium. “It’s good to have you back here. I’m really happy,” said stadium announcer Norbert Dickel, welcoming the 9,300 fans who had turned out to the 80,000-strong stadium. The “yellow wall,” the heart of the stadium, the south stand, was unfamiliar with the seating bowls, but otherwise the atmosphere had a touch of earlier normalcy.
Borussia vom Niederrhein were greeted with a concert of whistles as they entered the pitch. Otherwise, the spectators ensured a reasonably normal Bundesliga atmosphere, which was worthy of superior play on the first day of the match. BVB, whose luxury outfit had been updated with young English star Jude Bellingham, rightly showed great respect for Gladbach. The Rhenish was the only high-level team that did not lose a top performer this summer, but currently has four injured regulars.
Dortmund also had to deal with injuries. Veteran Lukasz Piszczek went down with back problems and former Gladbacher Thorgan Hazard had to leave the field in the 15th minute with a thigh injury. In midfield, the Dortmund runner-up and the fourth from the previous season were initially neutralized. Surprisingly, guest coach Marco Rose opted for a triple chain, a formation he had hardly used in recent months without the still injured Denis Zakaria.
Initially little chance of scoring
As a result, the spaces in the midfield were tight, initially there were hardly any scoring opportunities in an otherwise intense game. Westfalia’s leadership after a good half hour was a surprise at the time. The two 17-year-olds resolutely combined Bellingham and striker Reyna, who scored his first goal in the Bundesliga. Gladbach’s central defender Nico Elvedi did not look happy. Until the break, Gladbach had more ball possession and did more for the game, Dortmund countered with the lead on the back and increased a bit happily after the break. Gladbach’s Ramy Bensebaini brought down the strong Reyna in the penalty area. Referee Felix Brych initially decided to continue playing, but then had contact with video referee Tobias Reichel and gave the penalty after studying television footage. A complicated decision, especially since it was apparently not a clear error of judgment by Brych beforehand. Haaland certainly transformed and gave the Dortmund game even more security.
Gladbach tried to increase the pressure again with newly recovered Marcus Thuram and Alassane Plea as substitute forwards. The guests were unlucky when Mats Hummels also ran into Thuram in the penalty area after about an hour, but this time Brych rightly rejected the penalty whistle. Gladbach tried everything, Dortmund responded and was rewarded. 13 minutes before the end, Haaland decided with a perfect counterattack for the decision.
Next weekend Dortmund will travel to FC Augsburg, Mönchengladbach will host Union Berlin (both on September 26 at 3:15 pm, live ticker on sportschau.de).
