SC Freiburg had not beaten Borussia Dortmund since 2010. That changed on matchday 20 of the Bundesliga, with BVB suffering another bitter blow in the battle for the Champions League.

BVB had to admit defeat 1: 2 (0: 0) to national coach Joachim Löw on Saturday (6 February 2021) and conceded the first Bundesliga defeat to Baden after 19 unbeaten matches in this duel. SC Freiburg’s last victory over Dortmund was in May 2010, before current Freiburg manager Christian Streich took office.

Streich was also pleased with a post-match wink at Sportschau: “We’ve been trying for many years. Now we’ve won at least one match against everyone.” Vincenzo Grifo was also in a good mood: “We were very, very attached and I think we have given our spectators great pleasure at home today.”

Freiburg double strike

Wooyeong Jeong (49th minute) and Jonathan Schmid (52nd) got Freiburg cheering on Saturday in their 700th Bundesliga game with a double strike. BVB goalkeeper Marwin Hitz did not look good on the second goal. Only the great talent Youssoufa Moukoko scored for the guests (76th), who with coach Edin Terzic have to endure the next bitter disappointment in the fight for the minimum goal. The Champions League target ranges moved further away.

“It’s totally upsetting and annoying to be here now and talking about the same things again,” Terzic explained on the sports show. “But we have no choice but to stay positive, keep working hard and always be ready to do the extra meter.” In a few words, Captain Marco Reus described the mood: “How should we be? Shit, of course.”

A promising start for BVB

BVB traveled to the Black Forest Stadium with a clear intention. The club now wants to “start a series”, Dortmund’s head of licensed players Sebastian Kehl announced before the game. But nothing came of it. The start was promising: after four minutes, the national player Emre Can crashed the ball against the crossbar. A few minutes later, Freiburg goalkeeper Florian Müller had to save striker Erling Haaland (12th). The favorites remained the most dangerous stages of the first half, in which Freiburg also had good chances.

Hitz’s mistake on the second goal

Terzic at 0-2: “He seemed very unhappy”

The hosts made the match largely open midway through the first half. Not enough came from BVB in the first round. Then it was Freiburg who got off to a brilliant start in the second section. First it was South Korean Jeong, who carried out the execution from a good 20 meters. BVB goalkeeper Marwin Hitz assisted with Schmid’s goal soon after. Hitz was on the ball with a shot from the right wing of the area in the near corner, but it did not prevent the 0-2. The Swiss first stayed with his head down on the grass. Top talent Moukoko hit the post after an hour, but later, after a performance from Haaland, he made sure Dortmund had hope. The favorite pressed for the tie, but could not do it. Moukoko missed the last chance.

Freiburg will play Werder Bremen on Saturday (3:30 PM), while the Dortmund team will host TSG Hoffenheim at the same time.
