Bundesliga: Borussia Mönchengladbach turn the game around against SC Freiburg after half-time

After a failed first half, Borussia Mönchengladbach beat SC Freiburg 2-1 (0-1). Roland Sallai got the leadership of Freiburg (minute 10). In the second half, Marcus Thuram turned the game around (53rd, 60th).

The short distance to the break was flattering for Gladbachers, who were weak in the first half. Freiburg’s attacks mostly followed the same pattern: in exchange situations, they played the ball from midfield between the goalkeeper and the defensive chain, so Roland Sallai scored the advantage (10th), and Lucas Höler missed the Freiburg’s second goal (15th) a little later.

Only Gladbach’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer avoided a previous higher deficit, stopping against Sallai (22nd), Ermedin Demirović (35th) and against Höler with a strong defense standing on the line (45th + 1).

Rose reacts at halftime

Attacking almost nothing was with the Gladbachers. Coach Marco Rose reacted at halftime, changing the formation from a four-man chain to a three-man chain and brought in defensive player Denis Zakaria for the pale offensive Hannes Wolf. This made the defense seem more stable, but Gladbach also became more dangerous offensively, especially due to Marcus Thuram and luck.

After a flat cross, Lars Stindl jumped the ball into the Freiburg penalty area with such joy that Thuram was able to catch it straight, and Freiburg’s Baptiste Santamaria missed his own goal (53rd). A few minutes later, Thuram won a career match against Philipp Lienhart, rounded off goalkeeper Müller and pushed (60th). And Thuram was on the verge of scoring the ‘hat trick’ when he got into the center on the left wing and fired just past the right post (63rd).

Freiburg had nothing to counter this until the fifth minute of injury time, when Keven Schlotterbeck found himself. However, the blow was conceded for an offside position in the development of the video assistant, which saved Gladbach from victory. Freiburg lags behind Gladbach with 37 points (now 39 points). Gladbach is just four points behind the Europa League spots, which have Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen with 43 points each.
