Union Berlin won the opening game of the third day of the Bundesliga 4-0 (1-0) against FSV Mainz 05. The local goals were scored by Max Kruse (13th minute), Marcus Ingvartsen (49th), Marvin Friedrich (63 °) and Joel Pohjanpalo (64 °).

Following a convincing 1-1 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday two, Union manager Urs Fischer switched two positions: Marcus Ingvartsen and Max Kruse played for Marius Bülter and Taiwo Awoniyi from the start. His opposite Jan-Moritz Lichte changed in his first match as head coach of the 05er three times compared to the 1: 4 home loss against VfB Stuttgart: by Ridle Baku (change to VfL Wolfsburg) Moussa Niakhaté (yellow penalty -red) and Leandro Barreiro (bench) started with Alexander Hack, Philipp Mwene and Pierre Kunde Malong.

Already early in the game it was clear that Fischer had the right nose, especially with Kruse. Captain del Hierro was involved in almost all the offensive actions of the inhabitants of the capital in the initial phase. In the 13th minute it was only Kruse who got Alte Försterei cheering for the first time.

In Union’s well-structured first attack, Robert Andrich Sheraldo Becker cleared the right wing that is worth watching. Kruse’s center headed confident at the far post to make it 1-0. It was his first goal with Union Berlin.

After a brief upbringing of the Mainz team, the Eiserne finally assumed command. Through intelligent pressure on the opposing court, the home team did not give FSV a chance to take offensive action and was able to change quickly and dangerously over and over again. Again Becker and Kruse were the main players who could have made it 2-0 in the middle of the second half. When Becker showed up, former Bremen Kruse was half a step too late (27).

Mainz with practically no chance in the first round

And the Mainz? During the entire first half there was little or nothing to do with the FSV. Only in minute 38 did Jean-Philippe Mateta statistically register the first shot on goal from the guests. However, his header clearly missed in Berliner’s area.

When things were going fast in the Mainz ranks, Union always had an answer. After Boetius’ pass, Quaison almost got into a promising position. Friedrich hit the Swedes without humor (43.).

After switching sides, Alexander Hack managed to prevent the Berliners from getting off to a fast start with a determined action against Invartsen. A short time later the bell rang:

Trimmel found Ingvartsen a penalty free cross, who thanked him and hit the far corner with his left foot to make it 2-0 (49th).

Once again Mainz seemed spurred on by the goal. The counterattacks, mostly relatively uncoordinated, took place gradually in the arena. Mateta still had the best chance, but Schlotterbeck (53) constantly stopped him.

Iron Double Strike: Pohjanpalo strikes 35 seconds after being substituted in

After the 05er went off again, Union got back in control of the game. With a free kick from right midfield, Trimmel found the perfect run at Friedrich: 3-0 (63rd). The decision in this game.

But the night should be a bit more uncomfortable for the Mainz team. Immediately after the goal, Union coach Fischer was joined by newcomer Pohjanpalo, who apparently didn’t need time to start. 35 seconds after entering the field, a deflected center landed on loan from Leverkusen. Pohjanpalo did not hit the ball properly on the first attempt, but was allowed to continue with friendly help from the Mainz team and scored from a few meters for the fourth goal (64).

After the freestyle, Union had to do its duty: the home team played very compactly defensively and physically strong in the final minutes. Mainz didn’t get another shot on goal. Pohjanpalo could even have put together his double pack. 05 Goalkeeper Zentner rejected with force (81º).

Unión sends a very strong signal and is in third place in the table with four points from the first three games.

For Mainz, the false start with 0: 4 in the capital is perfect. The 05er lost the opening three games of this season.

Mainz has Bayer Leverkusen as a guest after the international break (October 17). Union Berlin faces FC Schalke 04 the next day.
