Brexit dispute: Manfred Weber accuses Boris Johnson of “pure spectacle”

Faced with an imminent hard Brexit, the president of the Christian Democrats in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber, accuses the British government of irresponsibility. “London’s black peter game is pure spectacle and it doesn’t help anyone,” Weber told the Funke media group. These “political games” are very frivolous towards British citizens.

Criticism is directed primarily against Prime Minister Boris Johnson. This is in front of the fragments of his politics. “You will have to explain to the British in the coming months why the Brexit promises were dishonest,” Weber said. The EU will not conclude any contracts with partners who do not take existing contracts seriously. However, one remains ready to negotiate, Weber said. And: “We want an agreement, we want a close collaboration also in the future.”

The transition phase ends on December 31

Johnson said on Friday after the EU summit that on January 1 he would agree to a harsh break without a treaty with the EU. The EU obviously has no interest in a free trade deal desired by Britain, as with Canada, Johnson said.

Without such an agreement, tariffs and fees would weigh heavily on trade between the UK and the EU. The transition phase will end on December 31 this year, during which Britain still has free access to the EU internal market and EU exports can be delivered to the UK without restrictions. Experts believe that the UK economy would suffer the most from a hard Brexit. But the strong German export industry would also be affected.

In reality, the negotiations should continue on Monday, but British negotiator David Frost is said to have discharged his EU colleague Michel Barnier. However, observers assume that the negotiations will continue anyway.
