Breonna Taylor: Louisville fears riots over court decision

Nervousness grows in the American city of Louisville, in the US state of Kentucky, over a court decision in the case of black police officer Breonna Taylor, who was shot and killed by white police officers. Concerned about possible disturbances, the police erected barricades in the city of the state of Kentucky, shops and restaurants protected their glass facades with sheets of plywood. Mayor Greg Fischer imposed a state of emergency and a nightly curfew from 9 pm to 6:30 am (local time) on Tuesday due to possible “riots” in the city.

Taylor, 26, was fatally shot in March after an exchange of gunfire between Taylor’s partner and police. Police had entered Taylor’s apartment shortly after midnight without warning. Taylor’s friend was in bed with Taylor at the time and believed he was being robbed. He opened fire with his gun, which was his legal property.

Police were allowed into the apartment without warning, according to the Reuters news agency by means of an arrest warrant. One of the police officers involved has already been dismissed.

The Taylor case has caused outrage across the country. During protests against racism and police violence against blacks following the death of black George Floyd in a brutal police operation in late May, Taylor’s photo was repeatedly shown and his name was mentioned: he is one of the symbolic figures of the Black Lives Matter movement.
