The Southwest Greens board of directors had asked the mayor of Tübingen, Boris Palmer, to leave after a comment about the crown pandemic. Now he receives the endorsement of the party: several members of the Greens have protected him in an appeal. He says: “The assembled board levels should seek dialogue with him and abandon the rebellious style of measurement.”

Signatories include Antje Vollmer, former Bundestag vice-president, and Martin Hahn, member of the Baden-Württemberg state parliament.

The call goes on to say: “Since its inception, our party has been a place of passionate debate, open debate, freedom of expression, and respect for minority views.” This corresponds to the green principles of non-violence and grassroots democracy. “Boris Palmer is a veteran of the Baden-Württemberg Greens, he is a staunch ecologist and sometimes a rebellious free spirit.” Palmer is not impossible to teach, but he has given serious reasons for his position.

Palmer had said in an interview in late April: “In Germany, we can save people who would be dead anyway in six months.” He explained his statement with concern for children at risk of poverty, especially in developing countries, whose lives were threatened by the economic consequences of confinement. He admitted that his sentence had led to misunderstandings.

In response to this, green leaders in the federal, state and district associations of Tübingen had stated that they no longer wanted to support him.
