Bomb found in residential area of Chemnitz! Approximately 15,000 people were evacuated
Chemnitz – Crash on wednesday night in Chemnitz! During construction work on Wilhelm-Firl-Straße in the Heckert area, a Bomb found Right in front of an eleven floor!
The Wilhelm-Firl-Straße / Burkhardtsdorfer Straße / Faleska-Meinig-Straße area was cordoned off on a large scale. Police and firefighters were at the scene with various emergency services.
Meanwhile, a special unit investigated whether the suspected item was actually a bomb. Result: The item is a 250kg WWII American-style aerial bomb!
The area will be evacuated within a one-kilometer radius starting Thursday afternoon at the earliest. About 15,000 people are affected by the evacuation.
Update, 9:50 pm: The city of Chemnitz has now released a map showing the approximate restricted area for the Thursday afternoon evacuation. The evacuation area extends in a radius of approximately one kilometer. The city also asks to support people who need help.
The city will announce more information early Thursday morning.

Update, 6:51 pm: According to the police, an evacuation within a radius of one kilometer has now been decided in coordination with the ammunition disposal service. “The specific evacuation area is currently being determined,” a police spokesman said.
The area is expected to be evacuated starting Thursday afternoon at the earliest, they say.
As soon as the specific evacuation area has been determined, it will be posted. Affected residents can then prepare for the next evacuation. The city plans to announce more information about the evacuation area shortly.
Schools and nurseries are still open on Thursdays.
Update, 6:25 pm: As the Chemnitz police just announced, the suspicion has been confirmed: it’s a bomb! Maybe one WWII air bomb. “Other necessary measures, in particular a possible evacuation, will now be coordinated with the rescue services and the city of Chemnitz,” said a police spokesman.
Update, 6:20 pm: The area around the construction site has been cordoned off on a large scale! The Ordnance Disposal Service (KMBD) has arrived and is now investigating the suspicious item.
A suspicious object was only found during construction works in Chemnitz Sonnenberg in June. However, it turns out to be an old water pipe (TAG24 informed).
