In Göttingen, you may have to defuse or blow up various rags from WWII during the day. Most of the evacuation area has already been cleared.

More recently, only one person was in the restricted area around the four sites, said operations manager Christian Schmetz of the NDR in Lower Saxony in the morning. The helpdesk organization used a drone with a thermal imaging camera to ensure that none of the 8,300 people were in the cordoned off area.

The deactivation will probably last until Sunday

Once the evacuation is complete, the munitions disposal service will survey the situation at the sites in the western part of the city. Based on the four suspected cases, the city assumes that the action will last until Sunday night between 10 pm and 2 am, if all goes well. If one or more bombs are involved, they must be defused. If this is not successful, they should be exploited in a controlled manner. The result would be a pressure wave that could also break windows. The worst case scenario: The bomb explodes in an uncontrolled way, as in 2010 when it was deactivated very close. Three members of the explosive ordnance disposal service were killed.

Around 8,300 people had to leave their apartments and houses in Göttingen this morning.

Due to the likely long duration of the operation, the city had previously asked residents to seek accommodation outside the exclusion zone, for example in its private surroundings. Due to the special situation, the state of Lower Saxony had the Crown rules in Regarding the deactivation of bombs and evacuations, he added. If you have to leave the area, you can stay with multiple people in another household. Anyone who needs help finding accommodation can head to the city. About 500 people have registered the need for accommodation, he said.

There are three evacuation centers available

For the moment, those affected can stay in one of the three evacuation centers. There are two schools and the central cafeteria of the University of Göttingen. The city announced that the accommodation would be “pandemic-friendly.” When choosing the building, care was taken to ensure that they could be accommodated in many individual rooms. All those affected must also receive FFP2 masks free of charge during their stay.

Diversion and substitution services for trains

Because the Göttingen train station also had to be evacuated, the Northeim railway uses buses as a replacement for local transport. ICE trains from Kiel through Hamburg and Hanover to the south are being diverted and, according to the railway, will be delayed by an hour. ICE trains from Berlin to Frankfurt am Main it fails to a great extent.

Possibly a long detonator bomb

In early January, four suspicious objects were found on the ground during construction works in Göttingen’s Weststadt, near Godehardstrasse. According to the explosive ordnance disposal service, there is at least one fiasco between them, at a depth of twenty feet, possibly with a long-term detonator. This could be an allied WWII aerial bomb, which was designed to detonate late. The impacts can be seen exactly on site in old aerial photographs.
