Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier went into quarantine due to a corona case in his area. As announced by a spokeswoman for the Federal President’s Office in Berlin, a bodyguard of the head of state tested positive.
The man in command of the Federal Criminal Police is a first-degree contact person. Steinmeier has now undergone a crown test, but the first result is not yet available, the spokeswoman said.
First Merkel in quarantine, now Steinmeier
In late March, Chancellor Angela Merkel had also been quarantined at her home for almost two weeks as a precautionary measure because she had had contact with an infected doctor. During this time, they did three corona tests, but they all came back negative.
Merkel did not interrupt her government work while at home. He chaired cabinet meetings and held press conferences by telephone. Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and Economy Minister Peter Altmaier had also temporarily isolated themselves at the end of September.
In Maas, one of his bodyguards was also infected with the virus. Altmaier was quarantined as a precautionary measure because an employee of an EU minister who was present with him at a meeting of the EU Trade Council in Berlin had tested positive.
Steinmeier’s trip to the Frankfurt Book Fair is canceled
The federal president really wanted to present the German Book Trade Peace Prize at the Paulskirche in Frankfurt this Sunday at the end of the Frankfurt Book Fair. The winner is the Indian Nobel laureate, philosopher and economist Amartya Sen.
According to the Federal President’s Office, the award ceremony will take place anyway, and actor Burghart Klaussner will read Steinmeier’s speech. Due to the corona pandemic, Sen does not accept the award personally, but goes live from the US.
