Bodo Ramelow: Prosecutor requests waiver of immunity

It was an extremely heated debate in the Thuringian state parliament: when the state parliament discussed the handling of the archives of the “National Socialist underground” and the protection of the constitution in the summer, Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (left) showed the member of the AfD Stefan Möller the middle finger. Furthermore, Ramelow called the MPs a “disgusting bastard.” Möller filed a complaint.

The dispute could now have legal consequences for Ramelow. The Erfurt prosecutor’s office has requested the lifting of the Prime Minister’s immunity. It is about the accusation of injury, as a spokesman for the prosecution said. The “Thüringer Allgemeine” had already reported on this.

According to the Thuringian state parliament, Ramelow’s request for immunity waiver has already been received. Ramelow has immunity because he is also a member of parliament. In Thuringia, the judicial committee has to resolve the lifting of a member’s immunity. The president of this committee is the politician from AfD Möller, himself offended.

Only when the committee lifts Ramelow’s immunity will the investigation begin. According to the Public Ministry, the request had already been preceded by an initial verification on whether the complaints gave rise to an initial suspicion.

The CDU parliamentary group came out in favor of lifting Ramelow’s immunity. “The provocations of the left and right are damaging our country,” said its president Mario Voigt. He demanded that the incident be dealt with legally “without regard to the person.” “Of course, the prime minister’s immunity should be lifted if this is necessary for clarification.”

“Nasty sandbox games”

The finger had sparked a debate about decency. The Thuringian CDU condemned the skirmish between the left and the AfD as “nasty sand games”, the leader of the AfD parliamentary group, Björn Höcke, suggested that Ramelow resign. Others defended Ramelow. “A stinky finger is the only decent reaction to a mischievous one,” wrote the leader of Thuringia’s left-wing parliamentary group, Susanne Hennig-Wellsow, on Twitter.

Ramelow had been remorseful to some degree after the stink finger action. “The state parliament deserves my respect as a constitutional body. I didn’t show it the right way today. However, I will never let the AfD exploit my basic anti-fascist attitude, ”he wrote on Twitter at the time.
