AAt the corner of Nidda- and Weserstrasse in Frankfurt’s Bahnhofsviertel, there is a stop. The street is wet, a few minutes ago the water cannon was used to scare off blockers, there was a fight between protesters and police, and batons were used. The group of people dressed in black has fled in the direction of Mainzer Landstrasse, but the next blockade has already formed. Supporters of the “lateral thinker” movement are therefore stagnant.
The rally, which “lateral thinkers” want to go to, was due to start an hour ago, but the protesters have barely walked 500 meters so far. Then all of a sudden everything starts moving again. Fully-equipped police officers walk down the street towards Kaiserstraße, where a new blockade has emerged. “There is no right to Nazi propaganda”, it sounds from there.
Perseverance despite the water cannon
Scenes like this reappear on Saturday afternoons. Several times, protesters from the left-wing spectrum and from Antifa groups are blocking the route of the 600 or so “lateral thinkers” who are protesting against the crown measures under the slogan “No lockdown in Bembeltown.” The police used their water cannons twice to break through the blockades. But “lateral thinkers” also violate the rules. Because most of them do not wear mouth and nose protection, the train is repeatedly stopped by the police.
In the Frankfurt demonstration you cannot distinguish symbols such as the Reich flags or the so-called Jewish stars with letters such as “Unvaccinated”, as they were seen recently at the initiative’s rallies. Instead, there are many posters with the words “Free Assange”, white and red heart-shaped balloons. Because the manifestation cannot progress due to the new blocks, it eventually dissolves.
At this time, most of the supporters of the “lateral thinkers” are already in Rathenauplatz, where the latest demonstration has started. The area is fenced, the place is well packed, but the 2000 participants registered by the organizers of the “Querdenker” did not come. And again the protesters do not meet the requirements. There are not a large number of masks there either, the minimum distances are hardly respected and people stand together on stage. Shortly after 4 pm, a police loudspeaker announcement rings across the square. The meeting is dissolved. “Get away now,” people are asked.
A group of about a hundred protesters still persevered in the square. They are also threatened with a water cannon several times, which occurs after another quarter of an hour. Fountains of water spill over the group, the police force the remaining supporters of the “side thinkers” towards Roßmarkt.
The German Association of Journalists (DVJ) appealed to the police to allow the media to report freely. Initially, two journalists from the satirical magazine “Titanic” were prohibited from taking pictures during the demonstration. They could only have continued working after showing their press credentials.
Last week, around 20,000 “side thinkers” demonstrated against the federal government’s crown measures in Leipzig. There were riots and violent right-wing extremists also participated.
