The vaccine comes from the Mainz company Biontech and its US partner Pfizer. Dozens of vaccination centers have been set up in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for its administration. The particular challenge: a normal refrigerator like the flu shot is not enough to cool the medicine. Biontech corona vaccine should be stored at minus 70 degrees.
Manufacturers planned the transport of vaccination doses precisely in advance. 975 vials with five vaccination doses each, a total of 4875, come in a specially developed box the size of a water box, which is filled with dry ice. Logistics companies around the world should be able to deliver the vaccine from the factory within three days.
As soon as the boxes have reached their final destination, they will only be allowed to be briefly opened twice a day. Cooling in the transport boxes is sufficient for two weeks. Therefore, vaccination centers do not need to buy their own freezers.
However, the corona vaccine developed by the American biotech company Moderna, which is still pending approval, can be stored at minus 20 degrees. A normal freezer used in hospital pharmacies is sufficient for this.
