On Thursday morning a fire broke out at the Heßheim garbage dump, near Frankenthal. According to the police, in the meantime it had turned into a huge fire. The room must now be torn down for further extinction work.

On Thursday afternoon there was a press conference in the Heßheim town hall (Verbandsgemeinde Lambsheim-Heßheim). There the current state of fire fighting and investigation was announced. Michael Reith (SPD), Mayor of the Lambsheim-Heßheim community, thanked the 85 firefighters there. None were injured during the operation.

According to the police, a storage and sorting room for recyclable waste caught fire Thursday morning. Commercial and bulky waste is stored and classified there. When the fire brigade arrived, the room was already on fire and partially collapsed. The fire department now has the fire under control. According to the information, the extinction work probably lasts until the night.

Wheel loader requested to combat embers

As announced by Mayor Michael Reith, a Technical Assistance Agency (THW) wheel loader was called upon to reach the glowing nests at the back of the hall. In the morning, the fire department announced that an increase in the concentration of pollutants in the air had not been found. No hazardous waste was stored in the hallway. You could still smell the burning smell.

Schools could not ventilate due to a large fire in Heßheim

Due to the intense development of smoke, the population was initially asked to keep windows and doors closed. According to information from the SWR, the primary school in Beindersheim (Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis) asked parents to pick up the children in the morning. Since the windows must not be opened, the prescribed ventilation is not possible. “We can’t even go to the schoolyard,” read a message to parents. Heßheim primary school had also informed parents that morning why most of the nearly 100 students were staying home.

The THW expert should closely watch the static in the room due to the risk of collapse.

According to the fire department, an expert from the technical aid organization should examine the warehouse and the static as soon as possible, as there is probably a risk of collapse. According to a police spokesman, it has not yet been determined when fire investigators from the criminal police will be allowed to enter the scene of the fire. Initially, the police were unable to provide any information on the amount of damage.

According to the police, the cause of the fire is not yet clear. According to the mayor of the association, Reith, the material from the surveillance cameras in the hall will be evaluated. According to the South Structure and Approval Directorate (SGD), there is an expert in waste management on site.

Criticism of the Schutzgemeinschaft Heßheim for another incident

Five months ago there was a fire at the site of the garbage dump in Heßheim, in exactly the same room. The supervisory authority has confirmed this. This fact was criticized above all by the Schutzgemeinschaft Heßheim, the citizens’ initiative against the landfill. Spokesman Michael Hieronimus called for consequences after the two fires and the fatal accident that occurred next to the hazardous waste landfill two years ago.

Back then, in August 2018, two employees of the Süd Müll company died at the hazardous waste landfill when they poured a liquid into an incorrectly labeled container, causing a deadly chemical reaction.
