Can Trump defend himself against Biden? A personal assessment and top American reviews from FAZ in your email inbox every Thursday.
That may be good news for Biden, who has long led the polls. But the Democrat cannot be satisfied with his own appearance either. Because it was not adequate to remove the doubts that Trump had brutally cast for months on the leadership strength of “Sleepy Joe”. Do Americans want a man as president and commander in chief of the Armed Forces who continues to seek the moderator’s help during a televised debate against the incumbent? Who gets confused quite reliably when listing facts and figures? Is it enough for them to realize that Joe Biden has better manners? Or would they have liked more evidence that the Democratic candidate could also deal with Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping or Kim Jong-un?
Biden has seldom created the space to convincingly lay out his own plans rather than lament the stark innocence of the “worst president we’ve ever had.” If so, then these were mostly pieces that were familiar to the Obama administration. The fact that Biden wants to convert the federal vehicle fleet to electric cars and reintroduce the thermal insulation subsidies that Trump has abolished will not inspire many of those young Americans who see climate change as the biggest threat to their future. As in Biden’s own party, not many people believe that the United States can curb its structural racism and police violence by inviting law enforcement and civil rights officials to the White House.
Worse still for Biden: time and again he was seduced by Trump with statements that revealed the gap between his moderate old-school democratic attitude and the leading activists on the left today. He seemed weak when he refused, for example, to answer the question of whether Democrats would change the rules and expand the Supreme Court to create a left-liberal preponderance on the bench in the event of a rush hour election victory. How does that fit in with your claim that the Democratic Party, this is him now? On the issue of police violence, Biden also found himself caught in an attempt to ensnare central voters without angering his own side. Biden showed his worst weakness when he first strenuously denied that the left-driven “Green New Deal” was his plan, only to defend it as a self-financing project.
Anyone who has followed the television debate with enough goodwill to listen to the candidates’ attitudes on factual issues amid all the noise has generally heard Joe Biden’s most compelling approaches: “Obamacare” bailout is always worth more than default. of Trump in years. Promise to provide much better insurance coverage to Americans for much less money. Trump has nothing more to offer on the issue of the fight against the crown than the accusations against China and the democratic governors, while Biden at least indicated one direction: He wants to provide companies and schools with the means that will allow them to function epidemiologically in safe way. No one who takes climate change seriously will be lulled by Trump’s long-term promise to provide “pristine air and water.” It must be painful for every democratically minded patriot to hear how the president failed to forcefully condemn the racist militias that the call “stand down, get ready.” Or how Trump preemptively questions the election result.
Presumably inadvertently Joe Biden made it clear to the widest possible audience that he is just a transitional man. A candidate without visions who wants to end the Trump years and lead the country on the loose again. His hope is that the president’s bad behavior will mobilize Democratic voters. In 2016, that hadn’t worked for Hillary Clinton. Most of those who doubt in their own ranks will not have convinced Biden in the debate.
