Berlin has a curfew! In addition, the maximum number of participants for private celebrations will be reduced. And: at night only a maximum of five people are allowed to meet outdoors.

► Due to the sharp increase in corona infections, most shops, as well as all restaurants and bars in Berlin, will have to close from 11 pm to 6 am in the future. Exceptions are planned for gas stations, for example, but they are no longer allowed to sell alcohol at night.

Also, spending time outdoors will be severely restricted: in the future, only five people will be able to meet between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.

► In addition, new restrictions will be applied soon for private celebrations in closed rooms. In the future, only a maximum of 10 people will be allowed to participate instead of the previous 25 people.

Justice Senator Dirk Behrendt (Greens) said the measures from midnight on Saturday to October 31 will apply. Then we will see if the measures have been successful or if more are needed.

► The range of fines has also been increased and now starts at 5000 euros – Behrendt also encouraged districts to close if the rules were repeatedly violated.

The measures are mainly aimed at private celebrations and illegal parties, which the Berlin authorities see as the drivers of the infection process.

Previously critical of the federal government

Only since last Saturday have new restrictions been put in place in Berlin, which the Senate decided last week: Private outdoor celebrations with more than 50 participants have since been banned. There is a maximum limit of 25 participants in closed rooms. The requirement for masks in office buildings is also new.

Despite these resolutions, Berlin remained under pressure due to the rapidly increasing number of infections. Several times, representatives of the federal government publicly called on the city to do more to combat the corona pandemic and enforce the rules, most recently Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU).

Current cases of corona

The Senate administration reported 288 new corona cases for the capital on Tuesday night. Consequently, the number of cases has increased significantly again in the last 24 hours. There was no new death, but for the first time two indicators of the capital are in red.

Since the start of the measurement, 16,236 people have been infected with the new corona virus in the capital. Currently, 126 people are isolated and treated in the hospital (previous day: 111), of which 40 are in intensive care (previous day: 39). All other people are isolated nationally.

Like the day before, the number of people who died is 231. So three people died in Berlin in October. Neukölln (+61) reports on most new infections against Mitte (+43) and Tempelhof-Schöneberg (+38).

The incidence at 7 days is 87.3 in Neukölln, 62.7 in Mitte, and 61.6 in Freidrichshain-Kreuzberg. But Tempelhof-Schöneberg is also a hotspot with 57.3. To put it in perspective: in September two people died of Corona in Berlin, three in August. In July nine people infected with the coronavirus died, in June there were 16 people, in May 49, in April 134 people and in March 15.

13,601 (previous day: 13,447) people are considered recovered, so there are currently 2404 (previous day: 2270) active cases in the capital.

Two red lights!

Of the R value it is in red as of today. The 4-day value is currently 1.26.

The number of New infections per 100,000 inhabitants in a week keep going up: it is now 44.2 (previous day: 41.5) and therefore this traffic light is still in the red zone.

The third traffic light that Use of intensive care beds in the capital, as the day before: 3.1% and therefore it is green (it only turns yellow from 15%).

“I have to avoid a lockdown”

The government mayor had already discussed some of the measures on Monday. “If we don’t act now, we will end up locked up again,” said Müller of the RBB “Abendschau”. He criticized “party-crazy people” in some of the city’s parks. “There are a few hundred who are jeopardizing our success for the entire urban community in recent months,” Müller said.

If the situation in large cities cannot be contained, the result could again be contact restrictions at the national level. “We want and have to avoid a shutdown and then a curfew or an alcohol ban should be a possibility.”

► Health Senator Dilek Kalayci (SPD) also called for a nighttime alcohol ban on the weekend. It includes a ban on the sale of alcohol from 11 pm to 6 am and, according to it, should apply to restaurants, bars, clubs and nightclubs.
