The police will be on duty in Berlin with large numbers on New Year’s Eve. A Berlin police spokeswoman said that up to 2,900 additional workers would enforce the fireworks ban that applies in many places in the capital from afternoon to night. Consequently, there are also 600 officers from other federal states among the 2,900 police officers.
The lighting of firecrackers is still prohibited in many places in Berlin. The Senate released a list last week of 56 places where that will be the case. These include large squares and landmarks such as Potsdamer Platz, Breitscheidplatz, and the Brandenburg Gate. It is also forbidden to stay in these places. The Berlin fire brigade prepares for a kind of state of emergency on New Year’s Eve.
