In 2016, the Islamist assassin Anis Amri drove a stolen truck to a Berlin Christmas market. He killed twelve people and wounded 100.

Berlin – After the commemoration ceremony of the anniversary of this attack, the young people (27, 31) wanted to take aerial photos of the Memorial Church and Breitscheidplatz on Saturday night, with a drone. That went completely wrong!

While trying to fly past the bell tower, the unmanned flying object was caught in a gust of wind and crashed into the facade.

“The drone apparently had a weak battery and got stuck in a honeycomb on Eiermann’s facade around 1 am,” a police spokesman said. It could no longer be released by radio control.

Therefore, the amateur pilots decided to call the fire brigade.

When the first forces arrived, it quickly became apparent that a simple revolving ladder was out of place for rescue. Therefore, the operations management used a 50 meter telescopic mast crane. Using a grappling hook, the drone was recovered at a height of 37 meters.

“That took a long time, the operation lasted more than two hours,” said a fire department spokesman. Therefore, ten forces were in action. The plane was impounded.

Running away and fighting fires could still have consequences for young people.

If they can prove negligence, pilots face costs in the higher four-digit range of the fire brigade. However, since this drone model weighs 249 grams and therefore 1 gram below the drone driver’s license requirement, the police report is likely to be removed for violating aviation rules.

The Memorial Church was built between 1891 and 1895. After its destruction in World War II, the tower was deliberately left as a ruin, later a modern building by architect Egon Eiermann was added.
