Alexievich is a member of the coordinating council of the opposition.
The writer belongs to the coordinating council of the opposition in Belarus, against which the regime of the ruling Alexander Lukashenko is taking action. After an election on August 9, which was overshadowed by massive forgeries, Lukashenko declared himself the winner. There were massive protests, which continue to this day, against which the authorities are proceeding with great brutality. Several prominent opposition officials were arrested. In the electoral campaign leading up to the presidential elections on August 9, he supported opposition candidate Svetlana Tichanowskaya, who has since fled into exile in Lithuania.
