Svetlana Alexievich, a politically committed Nobel laureate for literature, has left her homeland, Belarus. The 72-year-old traveled to Germany, according to consistent reports.

There are various reports on the writer’s motives. The trip was not politically motivated, according to the Reuters and AFP news agencies of Alexievich’s staff. The writer plans to return to Belarus in a month, AFP reported. Alexijewitsch wants to receive medical treatment in Germany. In addition, a work stay is planned.

On the contrary, the dpa news agency reports that Alexievich is concerned for his safety. The writer flew to Germany on Monday aboard a plane operated by the Belarusian airline Belavia and landed in Berlin-Schönefeld.

Alexievich is a member of the coordinating council of the opposition.

The writer belongs to the coordinating council of the opposition in Belarus, against which the regime of the ruling Alexander Lukashenko is taking action. After an election on August 9, which was overshadowed by massive forgeries, Lukashenko declared himself the winner. There were massive protests, which continue to this day, against which the authorities are proceeding with great brutality. Several prominent opposition officials were arrested. According to the Belarusian Interior Ministry, more than 350 people were arrested again during the protests on Sunday.

Western diplomats had campaigned for Alexievich’s protection and also established a security service after the writer felt threatened by the Belarusian authorities at her apartment in Minsk.

In 2015 Alexievich received the Nobel Prize for his work. She is one of the most prominent faces of the opposition movement. In the electoral campaign leading up to the presidential elections on August 9, he supported opposition candidate Svetlana Tichanowskaya, who has since fled into exile in Lithuania. International perpetrators had also complained about retaliation against Alexievich and expressed solidarity with her.
