Beirut: Helpers no longer see signs of survivors

After three days of fear, rescue teams have no hope of finding another survivor of the blast in Beirut. The head of the Chilean rescue team “Topos” (“Moles”), Francisco Lermanda, told reporters that night in the Lebanese capital.

The feverish search for someone buried had begun Thursday after Chilean rescuers with tracking devices and their search dog “Flash” discovered evidence of a survivor. Among other things, they were able to distinguish weak breathing signals several times. Beirut held her breath in hopes of a miracle. Little by little, emergency services cleared the debris. Because the building threatened to collapse, they advanced slowly.

At least 190 people died and more than 6,000 were injured in the August 4 disaster. The port and much of the surrounding residential areas were massively destroyed. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, seven people were missing until recently.
