Bayer Leverkusen: The Bender twins end their careers at the end of the season – “Anything but easy”

Football teacher quote

It is also interesting that after Schürrle, Bendtner and Thomas Kraft, they are the next ones who could continue to play at a fairly high level in what is actually still a good footballer age, but they don’t want to. I generally welcome that. I’m curious to see if there will be something of a change due to the younger and younger professionals.

All the best to the Benders. Nice story that they do it together. Just as you know about them. I will always fondly remember Manni as one of those loved ones at BVB. He’s not the best coach, but he already eats grass until you play with ashes. All the best!

With the players you named, I think there were different reasons.
Schürrle had simply already made so much money that after his last 3 years he probably would have had to make huge cuts to his salary and also probably would have had to sign a club that is well below BVB / Chelsea / Leverkusen / Wolfsburg category. I can understand that you don’t feel like doing it anymore if you are already a world champion, have played CL / EL regularly and have been a German national player for several years.
With the Benders, I think it could be related to the fact that they no longer want to harm their bodies. They both had quite a few injuries in their careers.
At Bendtner, I think it was simply due to a lack of offers. In his entire career, the guy never really convinced one of his stations and then went almost 9 months without a club at the end of his career. Of course he could have played in some rumble league, but I can imagine he was a bit below his dignity.
