The Hamburg fire brigade carried out a large-scale operation in Barmbek on Monday. There was an explosion in a residential building.

The explosion occurred on the third floor of an apartment building on Eckmannsweg. One resident suffered severe burns from the deflagration. An ambulance took him to the Boberg Accident Clinic. Emergency services also had to rescue five other residents from the building. Firefighters could take care of them on the spot.

The fire department stabilizes the apartment.

The windows of the affected apartment were smashed and much of the facade of the house also came off. Bricks, window frames and glass splinters were thrown into the street. Debris fell on a parked car. The walls of the apartment were moved by the force of the deflagration. Firefighters had to secure the rooms at risk of collapse with steel bars. A total of 33 firefighters are on duty.

The house is uninhabitable

Structural engineers are now investigating the currently uninhabitable building. Fire investigators have now inspected parts of the building and have discovered a hemp plantation. When asked about NDR 90.3, a police spokeswoman said a fertilizer may have caused the explosion. Because the residents of the house have a fighting dog, officers had to request a police dog for safety.

At the time of the blast, there were apparently two men in the apartment: the 39-year-old wounded who was hospitalized and another man who is on the run.
