In Augsburg, three young men are on trial for the violent death of a family man at Königsplatz in the city center. At trial, the 17-year-old main defendant admitted the fatal blow to the 49-year-old. At the beginning of the regional court hearing on Tuesday, he had his defense attorney read a corresponding statement.

According to the “Augsburger Allgemeine”, the defendant regrets what happened: “I didn’t want it to end like this.”

The young man is processed in the juvenile hall of the court. According to the prosecution, he fatally beat the man in an argument and is charged with fatal bodily injury. The victim’s artery tore and bled to death within minutes.

The event occurred after two pairs of friends met a group of young people in the lively square on the night of December 6, 2019 after visiting Augsburg’s Christkindlesmarkt. A fight developed between the two men and the seven young men. According to the investigation, a young man wanted to swallow a cigarette.

The attack made headlines across Germany last December. Since the victim was a member of the professional fire brigade in Augsburg, members of other fire brigades throughout Germany had publicly expressed their mourning. More than a hundred firefighters remembered their colleague who died in his spare time at the scene of the crime.

After the act of violence, the Prosecutor’s Office first obtained arrest warrants against the now main defendant for murder and against his six colleagues for complicity. However, following a complaint from a suspect, the Federal Constitutional Court determined that the arrest warrant was contrary to fundamental rights. The companions of the main defendant were released. The prosecution filed charges against three alleged thugs, but walked away from the murder charges.

The main defendant, who has both German, Lebanese and Turkish citizenship, along with two others from the group, is also charged with jointly beating the second man. Therefore, the trio must answer for collective personal injury.

The court has allocated a total of eight trial days and a ruling could be delivered in early November.
