Born in 1941 in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Korea was one of the most important representatives of jazz rock. In the early 1960s he established himself as a pianist, working with Stan Getz, Herbie Mann, and others. He joined the Miles Davis band at the end of the decade and played a key role in helping the trumpeter transition to a more contemporary sound.
After working with Davis, he founded his own electric band Return to Forever in 1971, which shaped the so-called era of fusion. In the following decades Korea worked on countless projects and thus showed its rank.
As a composer, Corea wrote the Latin jazz classic “Spain”, probably his most famous hit. Other well-known pieces that are considered jazz standards are “500 Miles High” and “La Fiesta.”
Korea often reversed the popular contrast between classical music and jazz with his performance, for example with his album “The Mozart Sessions,” which he recorded with Bobby McFerrin and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra of Minnesota. The performance of his second piano concerto “The Continents” in the 2006 Vienna Mozart year will be unforgettable.
In his long career, the pianist and keyboardist won 23 Grammy Awards and was nominated 67 times. He won more Grammy Jazz Awards than any other musician.
