AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine can be re-vaccinated, the European Medicines Agency decided. But there are reservations in countries like France and Denmark. Some politicians are now being vaccinated as a demonstration.

WThe European Medicines Agency (EMA), the Permanent Commission for Vaccination (Stiko) in Germany also concludes that the Astrazeneca corona vaccine can continue to be used. “The benefit of the vaccine outweighs the currently known risks,” Stiko announced on Friday. The approval authorities of France and Denmark were more cautious.

The data available to Stiko on the rare known cases of a form of thrombosis showed a so-called safety signal, according to the commission. But there is still no certainty. “Stiko will continuously monitor, verify and evaluate all expected data.” Should the need arise to restrict the groups for which the vaccine is considered suitable, Stiko will take this into account “immediately” in its recommendation for vaccination.

The corona vaccines with the Astrazeneca preparation, which had been suspended as a precaution, should start again on Friday in Germany after being suspended since Monday due to several cases of rare thrombosis in the cerebral veins.

A prominent politician was also one of the people who got vaccinated recently: Baden-Württemberg Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) was the first German head of government to be vaccinated against the corona virus. The politician received the newly approved vaccine from AstraZeneca on Friday at a vaccination center in Stuttgart. At the age of 72, Kretschmann is authorized to vaccinate.

The EMA reaffirmed the safety of the vaccine on Thursday. But an additional warning about possible rare blood clots will be added.

Denmark however, AstraZeneca does not want to use the corona vaccine at this time. First, the EMA’s decision “and its impact on the Danish vaccination program” must be examined, said the head of the health authority, Soren Brostrom. The EMA had rated the vaccine as “safe and effective” but at the same time had not ruled out a connection to dangerous blood clots.

In Denmark, 10 cases of serious blood clots are being investigated after AstraZeneca vaccines, including one death. In total, more than 140,000 Danes received the vaccine. The country became the first country in Europe to suspend vaccines after reports of blood clots last week. Several other countries, including Germany, subsequently issued a vaccination ban.

France expresses a restriction

In France now only people over 55 should get the AstraZeneca vaccine. This was recommended by the country’s health authority (HAS) on Friday in Paris. The reason for the recommendation is the fact that life-threatening blood clots mainly occurred in younger people.

To build public confidence after the temporary suspension of the AstraZeneca vaccine, a prominent politician, French Prime Minister Jean Castex, was publicly vaccinated. Castex should be vaccinated on Friday at the Begin military hospital near Paris, BFM TV reported Friday morning. The photos then showed the politician receiving his injection in the afternoon.
