Swedish pole vault superstar Armand Duplantis has broken the 26-year outdoor world record set by the legendary Sergej Bubka. The only World Cup runner-up and 20-year-old European champion crossed 6.15 meters at the Diamond League athlete meeting in Rome. On the second attempt, he jumped an inch higher than the Ukrainian Bubka in 1994.
In the hall, Duplantis already mastered 6.18 meters on February 15 of this year. This height is held as an official world record by the World Athletics Federation. It wasn’t until early September that the Swede achieved the second-best outdoor performance in history with 6.07 meters in Lausanne. In all its 15 competitions (indoor / outdoor) “Mondo” was undefeated this year.
Duplantis has yet to start at the Summer Olympics. The Swede could celebrate his Olympic debut next year at the Tokyo Games. Currently, organizers are confident that despite the corona pandemic, they will be able to start as planned on July 23, 2021.
The competition in Rome didn’t stand a chance against Duplantis. At 5.80 meters each, Ben Broeders (Belgium) and Ernest Obiena (Philippines) took second and third places. Former world champion Raphael Holzdeppe landed seventh with 5.45 meters.
