World boxing champion Anthony Joshua has successfully defended his heavyweight title against challenger Kubrat Pulev. The 31-year-old Briton won the World Cup match in London against the eight-year-old Bulgarian by knocking out in the ninth round and celebrated his 24th win in the 25th professional match.
Pulev took a flurry of punches in round 3 and fell, but initially recovered surprisingly well and posed problems for Joshua with his receiving ability; In the ninth round, however, a series of uppercuts and a righthand home stretch was too much for the challenger. . One of Joshua’s first supporters was Floyd Mayweather, who was sitting in the audience (soon to be used against YouTuber Logan Paul).

Joshua maintains his three world titles from the WBA, WBO and IBF associations and can look forward to a union fight against WBC champion and compatriot Tyson Fury. Promoter Eddie Hearn promised, “Starting tomorrow, we will take care of making the Fury fight possible. We will.” The likely time for the fight for unification is the summer of 2021.
Pulev, whose training was also attended by successful German coach Ulli Wegner, suffered his second loss in his 30th professional fight and probably lost his last shot at a world title. Before that, he had only lost to Wladimir Klitschko in 2014.
