Android malware targets banking apps

[ad_1]

Android is not immune to malware, I just recently blogged about how it can even affect apps for kids. A new malware called EventBot is aimed more at older users because it wants to branch out data from banking and cryptocurrency applications.

EventBot disguises itself as a serious application, such as Microsoft Word for Android, and then incorrectly uses accessibility features to ensure the necessary privileges so that it can register with the operating system. Therefore, it tries to take advantage of user data, specifically from applications such as PayPal, Coinbase or CapitalOne. Two-factor authentication messages are specifically intercepted.

The malware logs all user input in the background and can also read notifications. This gives criminals a very accurate view of what is happening on an infected device. In recent weeks, the creators of the malware have continued to develop and improve encryption, for example. Therefore, it is still a very new malware.

Unlike many other malicious programs, EventBot does not use old code, but it has been developed from scratch, so there are probably experts at work. If you’re worried, I can reassure you: EventBot has yet to be seen on the official Play Store. So if you don’t install apps from unknown sources, you’re on the safe side. Distribution currently is likely to be very low.
