Google has released figures for the distribution of individual versions of Android for the first time since May 2019. Accordingly, Android 10 runs on about 8 percent of all Android smartphones and tablets seven months after launch. The predecessor Android Pie achieved just over 10 percent in the same period and can now be found on almost every third device. Android Oreo (8.x) from 2017 still plays a big role at 21 percent.
The seemingly small portion of Android 10 is truly a hit for Google and Project Treble. Introduced in Google I / O 2017, which was introduced in the operating system with version 8.0, it makes it easier for device manufacturers to deliver updates. First, Project Treble separates the user interface and device-specific drivers; Manufacturers do not have to take this into account when upgrading. The effects can be seen: Seven months after launch, Android Oreo, the latest version that did not benefit from the new interface, only reached 5 percent.
In the Android Studio developer tool, Google provides information on the distribution of the individual versions of Android, divided into individual API levels. More recently, the company announced the corresponding figures in May 2019.
However, current figures show that about 40 percent of all Android devices use a version of the operating system that is at least three years old. In addition to security breaches, this also means that features are lacking for developers. If you want to reach at least half of all devices running with an app, you need to select API level 27 and thus Android 8.1 as the starting point from April 2020.
Android Studio instead of developer home page
Unlike until May 2019, the numbers are no longer accessible through the Android Developers home page. Instead, Google has integrated a corresponding ad into its Android Studio developer tool (download), as reported by 9to5Google. The overview can be accessed using the “Create new project” function and associated basic settings (“Help me choose”). Clicking on the relevant API level opens a list of associated innovations compared to the predecessor.
Google determines the distribution of individual versions within a seven-day period. Only devices that use a Google service and are connected to the Internet within the time limit are registered. The rate at which Google updates the overview in Android Studio is unknown.
