meNot enough can be said: no institution in Germany has addressed the issue of sexual violence under its roof for years as comprehensively as the Catholic Church. But that alone says nothing about the success of this company. It cannot be said often enough that, for example, prevention efforts in the church area are unparalleled. On the other hand, in the year that has ended, many Church representatives have done little or nothing to help the Church regain lost trust.
How close light and shadow meet in the Episcopal Conference has been observed in recent months in the (Arch) Bishops Bätzing (Limburg) and This (Aachen) on the one hand and Woelki (Cologne) and Heße (Hamburg) on the one hand the other: transparency and clarification there, Instrumentalization of those affected and legal struggles there. It is not to be expected that things will one day improve and that the bishops will find for themselves a unified line more than ten years after “Canisius” on questions of clarification and reassessment.
All of this could be accepted with a shrug of the shoulders if an institution did not bankrupt itself, which in the Caritas field in particular contributes a lot to the common good. It is doubtful that our society will be better once the churches are irrevocably marginalized.
