American poet Louise Glück received the Nobel Prize for Literature this year. This was announced by the Swedish Academy in Stockholm. This distinguished the 77-year-old woman for her “unmistakable poetic voice”: this makes individual existence a universal experience.

Glück has published several volumes of poetry since 1968. He received the Pulitzer Prize for “Wilde Iris”. The author was born in New York in 1943.

Glück follows the Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk and the Austrian Peter Handke; they were honored last year. Handke’s honor had sparked protests because he had made a name for himself as a Serbian lawyer during the Yugoslav wars in the 1990s. Many accuse him of having defended war crimes.

The Nobel prizes are named after the Swedish chemist and inventor Alfred Nobel (1833-1896). In his will, he stated that his estate would become the financial basis for five international awards in the fields of physics, chemistry, literature, medicine and peace. In 1968, an economics prize was launched in memory of Nobel.
