Amal Clooney has resigned as the UK’s Special Representative for Press Freedom. The human rights lawyer is reacting to the British government’s “deplorable” plan to violate international law in the Brexit dispute. He had no other choice, the wife of Hollywood actor George Clooney said in a letter published by The Guardian on Friday.

According to a letter from the British-Lebanese lawyer to Chancellor Dominic Raab, the government did not want to assure him that it would deviate from this point of view. The 42-year-old is disappointed to have to take this step. “Because I have always been proud of the UK’s reputation as a champion of international law and the ‘fair play’ culture for which it is known,” the letter continues.
The background for this is the government’s plans for a single market law that would partially nullify the Brexit deal negotiated with the EU in 2019. The government had admitted that the plans would partly violate international law. Brussels speaks of a breach of the law and calls for the controversial clauses to be withdrawn at the end of September. London is driving adoption.
