At least 16 people were killed and dozens injured in an explosion at the airport in the Yemeni city of Aden. Shortly before the detonation, a plane carrying the new Yemeni government landed.

In Yemen, there was a serious explosion at the Aden airport, killing at least 16 people and injuring many others. Many of the injured were seriously injured and were taken to surrounding hospitals. Eyewitnesses report that the detonation was accompanied by shots fired.

The explosion happened shortly after a Saudi Arabian plane landed with the new Yemeni government on board. According to Information Minister Muammar Al-Erjani, the head of government and his members are doing well. “We assure our people that all members of the cabinet are safe,” he wrote on Twitter. It was a “cowardly terrorist attack by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia.”

President Abed Rabbo Mansur Hadi swore in the 24 ministers of the newly formed government in a ceremony in Saudi Arabia on Saturday. The new government is made up of representatives of rebels active in the south of the country, as well as members of the previous government, backed by Saudi Arabia. After years of struggle for power, both sides reached an agreement in 2019 and joined forces against the Shiite Houthi rebels in the north of the country. They control the capital Sanaa, among other things, which is why Aden, in the south of the country, currently serves as the provisional capital.

People are suffering from civil war.

UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths wrote on Twitter: “I condemn the attack on the Aden airport upon the arrival of the cabinet and the death and injury of many innocent civilians.” His condolences to all the mourners of the victims. “This unacceptable act of violence is a tragic reminder of the importance of urgently returning Yemen to the path of peace,” continued Griffiths.

Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the world. 24 million people, about 80 percent of the population, depend on humanitarian aid. Furthermore, people are suffering from the war against the Houthi rebels, in which tens of thousands of people have already died, many of them civilians.
